Air quality deteriorated significantly across Malaysia on Thursday, with multiple monitoring stations reporting unhealthy readings as haze conditions returned to the region. Seremban in Negeri Sembilan and Larkin in Johor emerged as hotspots, both logging API (Air Pollutant Index) readings of 169, indicating unhealthy air quality that may affect sensitive groups. A total of 21 monitoring stations across the country recorded elevated pollution levels during the morning assessment.
The API scale ranges from 0-50 (good) to above 300 (hazardous), with readings between 101-200 classified as unhealthy. At these levels, members of the general public may begin to experience health effects, while those in vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions—face heightened risks.
The recurring haze follows earlier episodes that had affected air quality across South and Southeast Asia. Authorities have not yet identified the specific sources contributing to the current deterioration, though transboundary pollution remains a persistent concern in the region during certain seasons.
The Department of Environment has advised the public to monitor air quality updates and take preventive measures, particularly those in the affected areas. Individuals are encouraged to limit outdoor activities, use air purifiers indoors, and wear N95 masks when venturing outside during periods of poor air quality.
