Air quality deteriorates across Malaysia with 17 areas hitting unhealthy levels

Seventeen areas across Malaysia have registered unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as air quality deteriorates nationwide, raising concerns among health authorities and residents.

Sarawak recorded the highest number of problematic locations with seven areas posting unhealthy API levels, according to latest monitoring data. The Klang Valley registered four unhealthy readings, while Johor documented three affected areas. The remaining locations were distributed across other parts of the country.

The API scale measures concentrations of major air pollutants to gauge air quality conditions. Readings in the unhealthy range pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

Authorities have been monitoring air quality closely as haze and pollution levels fluctuate across the region. Residents in affected areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use appropriate protective measures when venturing outside.

The situation underscores ongoing challenges Malaysia faces in maintaining healthy air quality standards across its diverse geographical regions, particularly during periods of seasonal atmospheric conditions.
