A major study led by researchers at Harvard University has found that aircrew members experience disproportionately high mortality rates from radiation-induced cancers compared to workers across nearly 500 other occupations. The analysis examined occupational exposure patterns and identified commercial pilots and flight attendants as facing the most significant radiation-related health burden in the aviation sector.
The elevated cancer risk stems from cumulative exposure to cosmic radiation at cruising altitudes, where atmospheric shielding is minimal. Flight personnel regularly work at heights exceeding 35,000 feet, where exposure to ionizing radiation substantially exceeds ground-level exposure. Frequent flyers accumulate doses comparable to or exceeding those received by certain medical professionals and industrial workers traditionally considered at-risk populations.
The study's findings suggest that current occupational health protocols may not adequately address radiation exposure in aviation. Researchers noted that many aircrew members remain unaware of the extent of their cumulative radiation exposure over career-long service. The research underscores the need for enhanced health monitoring and awareness programs within the aviation industry.
