Akasa Air, India's newest budget airline, is in advanced discussions to purchase over 200 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to fuel its growth ambitions through the remainder of this decade and beyond. The significant order would represent one of the largest commercial aircraft commitments by an Indian carrier in recent years.
The airline is targeting a final decision on the purchase agreement in the first quarter of 2024, according to industry sources. The 737 MAX, Boeing's workhorse narrow-body jet, has become the preferred platform for low-cost carriers across Asia seeking fuel efficiency and operational economy.
Akasa Air, which commenced operations in 2022, has already established itself as a competitive player in India's domestic aviation market. The proposed fleet expansion would substantially increase the carrier's capacity beyond 2032, positioning it as a major player in the regional skies alongside established competitors.
The aircraft order underscores the growth potential Indian carriers see in rising domestic travel demand. Budget airlines have captured significant market share as middle-class air travel continues to expand across India and South Asia.
