AkzoNobel offloads Southeast Asia paint operations to Nippon Paint

AkzoNobel, the parent company of the Dulux brand, is exiting its Southeast Asian operations through the sale to Nippon Paint Holdings, the Japanese multinational coatings manufacturer. The transaction values the Southeast Asia business at $1.35 billion, reflecting the region's significance as a growth market for decorative and industrial paint products.

The sale represents the latest in a series of strategic asset disposals by AkzoNobel in Asia-Pacific. The company previously divested its decorative paints operations in India for $1.6 billion and its Pakistan unit for 50 million euros, consolidating its portfolio across the broader region.

These divestments signal AkzoNobel's shift in strategic focus, allowing the Dutch group to concentrate resources on core markets while capitalizing on valuations in emerging economies. Nippon Paint, which has been expanding its footprint across Asia through acquisitions and organic growth, strengthens its position in Southeast Asia with this latest purchase.

The transaction is expected to complete subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The move underscores the growing consolidation within Asia's paints and coatings sector as major global players reassess their regional portfolios in response to evolving market dynamics.
