Albay college opens solar-powered facility for 6,000 students

LEGAZPI CITY — Daraga Community College in Albay has opened a solar-powered building designed to serve its student body of more than 6,000 while reducing environmental impact. The four-story structure, located in Barangay Salvacion in Daraga town, was inaugurated Wednesday following completion of its installation.

The facility features an array of solar panels capable of generating 96 kilowatts of electricity, providing a renewable energy source for daily campus operations. The system represents one of the region's notable efforts to integrate sustainable power generation into institutional infrastructure.

The project aligns with growing momentum in the Philippines toward renewable energy adoption in the education sector. Educational institutions across South and Southeast Asia have increasingly invested in solar technology to offset operational costs while reducing reliance on conventional power grids.

College officials did not immediately provide details on the facility's total construction cost or projected energy savings, though solar installations of this capacity typically offset significant portions of monthly electricity expenses over their operational lifespan.
