Albay suspends in-person classes Friday amid extreme heat conditions

MANILA — The province of Albay in the Bicol Region will suspend in-person classes on Friday as extreme heat conditions threaten student and staff safety. The decision comes as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported elevated heat index levels across multiple locations in the country, including Coron in Palawan and Dumangas.

The class suspension in Albay follows a series of similar measures implemented across the Philippines in recent days as the nation experiences unseasonably high temperatures. The provincial government cited both the severe heat index and a scheduled power interruption as factors necessitating the closure.

PAGASA has been closely monitoring atmospheric conditions that have pushed heat index values to levels considered hazardous for prolonged outdoor exposure. The agency's data indicated concerning readings in several populated areas, prompting local government units to take precautionary measures to protect residents, particularly children and vulnerable populations.

Education officials have advised schools to prepare alternative learning arrangements for affected students. The suspension affects all in-person academic activities, though remote learning may proceed where feasible.
