Alcaraz progressed to the semi-final stage of the Japan Open after Shapovalov retired from their quarter-final match due to injury. The world number three claimed the opening set 7-6 (7/3) in a competitive tiebreak before his Canadian opponent was unable to continue.
Shapovalov's withdrawal with the upper thigh injury denied the players the opportunity to complete their quarter-final contest. The injury forced the 25-year-old Canadian to exit the tournament prematurely, handing Alcaraz an advance to the semi-finals.
Alcaraz continues his campaign at the prestigious Japanese tournament, where he will face the winner of the remaining quarter-final matches. The Spaniard remains among the tournament favourites as one of the world's top-ranked players.
