Alert staff thwart scam, save woman $30,000 in shipping blunder

Staff at a Minnesota shipping facility averted a significant fraud this week after noticing a woman's unusual distress while processing an expensive overnight delivery. The customer, who believed she was paying $500 to ship $30,000 in cash for a cookbook purchase, displayed signs of concern that prompted alert employees to intervene.

When staff members questioned the nature of the shipment, they discovered the woman had been duped into believing she was conducting a legitimate business transaction. The cash, which would have been sent to scammers using a false shipping address, was instead secured and authorities were notified.

Police confirmed that the intervention prevented a classic advance-fee scam, in which fraudsters convince victims to send money under the pretense of purchasing goods or services. The woman, relieved at the discovery, was spared both the $30,000 loss and the $500 shipping fee.
