All Agniveers eligible for regular army enrollment after two-year service

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced that all Agniveers will be eligible for enrollment as regular soldiers upon completion of their two-year engagement period under the Agnipath scheme. The move addresses concerns raised by defence personnel and observers about career prospects under the recruitment initiative.

According to Singh, the transition to regular service depends on two key conditions: the willingness of the individual Agniveer and their ability to meet the prescribed selection criteria. This clarification signals the government's intention to provide career continuity for performers within the scheme.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced in 2022, represents a significant shift in Indian armed forces recruitment strategy. The programme enlists individuals for a fixed four-year term, with approximately 25 per cent of Agniveers expected to be absorbed into permanent service. However, Singh's latest statement extends potential regular enrollment opportunities to all completing personnel who qualify.

The announcement comes as the defence ministry works to streamline military recruitment and manage the substantial number of Agniveers entering the system. Officials have emphasized that the selection process for regular enrollment will maintain existing professional standards across the armed forces.
