The son of former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has requested that the public and media grant his father space to process his grief following the death of his long-time wife, Siti Hasmah.
Mukhriz said the loss was weighing heavily on the 99-year-old Mahathir, who had been married to Siti Hasmah for 70 years. The couple's partnership spanned seven decades, during which they navigated significant chapters of Malaysian political history.
The appeal underscores the need for sensitivity during this period of mourning for the family. Siti Hasmah, who was known for her role as Malaysia's First Lady during her husband's two separate tenures as prime minister, had been a prominent figure in the country's public life.
Mahathir, one of Southeast Asia's most prominent political figures, served as prime minister for a combined total of more than two decades. His relationship with Siti Hasmah was widely regarded as a cornerstone of his personal life throughout his lengthy career in public service.
