Alstom eyes 200 more e-locomotives from Indian Railways

Alstom is exploring a significant expansion of its locomotive manufacturing footprint in India through negotiations with Indian Railways for an additional 200 electric locomotives, according to company officials.

Vivek Garg, Managing Director of Alstom's Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited, confirmed that the follow-on order sits within contractual provisions agreed upon when the joint venture was established. The company has already delivered 650 locomotives from its facility in Bihar as part of the initial 800-unit contract, with full delivery scheduled for March 2028.

The Madhepura manufacturing plant, established in 2015 as a joint venture between Indian Railways and Alstom, has secured a 35-year lease on its land parcel, extending through 2048-49. Beyond locomotive manufacturing, the facility is being leveraged to produce complementary railway-related products, broadening its operational scope.

The potential 200-locomotive order would represent a significant vote of confidence in Alstom's domestic manufacturing capabilities and India's growing emphasis on electrifying its freight rail network. The company's facility currently houses modern machinery and infrastructure designed to support long-term manufacturing operations.
