Alumni urged to leverage tax incentives for school support

Deputy Finance Minister Amir Hamzah Azizan has encouraged alumni to make fuller use of available tax incentives when providing financial support to their educational institutions, signalling the government's commitment to mobilising private contributions for the school sector.

Addressing alumni networks, Amir Hamzah stressed that while generous monetary donations remain crucial, former students should also consider extending their involvement beyond cheque-writing. He highlighted the importance of diverse forms of contribution that can strengthen schools' operational capacity and student development programmes.

The call reflects broader efforts by the Finance Ministry to encourage philanthropic engagement with educational institutions through existing fiscal mechanisms. Tax deductions for donations to approved educational bodies represent one avenue through which alumni can support their schools while realising tax benefits.

Amir Hamzah's remarks underscore the government's reliance on private-sector and individual contributions to supplement public education funding, particularly as schools seek to expand facilities, improve learning resources, and enhance extracurricular opportunities for students.

Alumni associations across Malaysia's major institutions have increasingly been mobilised to support educational causes, with tax-advantaged giving mechanisms designed to facilitate larger voluntary contributions to the sector.
