Amazon builds out India logistics network ahead of festive shopping surge

Amazon announced the launch of 20 fulfilment centres, six sort centres, and 150 last-mile delivery stations across India on Monday, marking a substantial infrastructure push ahead of the festive season. The expansion will boost the company's total storage capacity in the country by 50 per cent to 64 million cubic feet, positioning it to handle heightened consumer demand during peak shopping months.

The e-commerce major's investment of over Rs 2,800 crore reflects its commitment to strengthening pan-India operations through a mix of facilities spanning metropolitan and non-metro areas. Six sort centres will be established in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur, and Varanasi, while seven of the 20 new fulfilment centres are also being set up outside major cities. This geographic diversification aims to improve delivery speeds and accessibility across regions.

Amazon will partner with third-party logistics providers to operate and manage the expanded network, leveraging established expertise in supply chain management. The infrastructure buildup complements the company's earlier announcement of creating over 1.6 lakh seasonal employment opportunities across 400 cities to manage the anticipated festive season demand surge. The initiative underscores intensifying competition in India's e-commerce sector as companies vie for market share during high-volume shopping periods.
