Amazon launches premium Android tablets to compete with iPad, Galaxy Tab

Amazon is making an aggressive push into the premium tablet segment with its new Alexa Tablets, departing from the company's traditional strategy of offering affordable devices. The tablets abandon Fire OS in favour of Android, signalling Amazon's intent to capture market share from established players like Apple's iPad and Samsung's Galaxy Tab series.

The devices showcase a material upgrade from previous Fire tablets, replacing plastic construction with premium aluminium chassis. This design enhancement comes alongside a corresponding price increase, positioning the tablets at a significantly higher price point than Amazon's legacy Fire tablet lineup.

The shift represents Amazon's recognition that the tablet market has evolved beyond budget-conscious consumers. By adopting Android and emphasising build quality, Amazon can appeal to users seeking alternatives to dominant premium brands while leveraging its Alexa integration across the ecosystem.

The move could reshape Amazon's tablet strategy in India and across Asia, where tablet penetration remains lower than in Western markets. The Android platform choice grants Amazon access to the Google Play Store ecosystem, potentially attracting users currently dependent on Apple or Samsung devices for specific applications and services.
