An American man has become the latest victim of an increasingly prevalent form of cybercrime known as pig butchering scams, losing Rs 4.7 crore to fraudsters who posed as women to gain his trust. The scammers exploited emotional connections established through online platforms before manipulating the victim into transferring substantial sums of money.
Pig butchering scams operate by creating fake romantic or friendly relationships with targets over extended periods. Once trust is established, perpetrators gradually introduce investment opportunities or financial schemes, convincing victims to transfer money through cryptocurrency exchanges or other digital payment methods. The term "pig butchering" derives from the notion of fattening up a pig before slaughter.
What distinguishes this case is the victim's experience of falling for the scheme twice. After losing money to the initial fraud, the victim was targeted again by similar fraudsters using comparable tactics, suggesting organized networks are actively exploiting individuals who have previously shown susceptibility to such schemes.
Cybersecurity experts warn that romance scams have become increasingly sophisticated, with scammers conducting detailed research on victims and maintaining elaborate false personas over months. Financial authorities across the globe, including in India, have intensified warnings about such schemes as cryptocurrency adoption increases, making fund recovery significantly more difficult once transfers are completed.
