Frances Tiafoe and Brandon Nakashima won contrasting quarterfinal contests to reach the men's semifinals at the Cincinnati Open, marking a remarkable surge by American talent at the event. Tiafoe defeated Italy's Lorenzo Musetti 7-6 (2), 7-5, while Nakashima overcame fellow American Taylor Fritz 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 in a battle between compatriots.
The pairing represents the first time two American men have reached the Cincinnati semifinals since Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish accomplished the feat in 2010. Nakashima's run to the final four is particularly notable, as he becomes the first American male player to reach the semifinals in both Canadian and Cincinnati tournaments in the same season since Mardy Fish in 2011.
On the women's side, Gauff and Pegula advanced to join their male counterparts in the semifinals, creating the possibility of American winners in both draws. "It's insane, I think we're all doing so well," Gauff said, expressing hope for double American title wins while acknowledging more matches remain to be played.
Tiafoe, coached by Wayne Ferreira—who previously worked with Nakashima—faces his upcoming semifinal with respect for his opponent's abilities. The American contingent's strong performance underscores the depth of emerging talent from the United States across professional tennis.
