Americans largely oppose Trump's Canada tariffs and Lake Ontario renaming plans
A new poll shows most Americans reject proposed tariffs on Canadian goods and the renaming of Lake Ontario, reflecting public scepticism toward the controversial proposals.

Recent polling data indicates widespread American opposition to two contentious policy proposals, with majorities expressing disapproval of both initiatives. Only one in five Americans support imposing higher tariffs on Canadian imports, while nearly three in five oppose the measure, according to the survey findings. Similarly, the proposal to rename Lake Ontario faces even steeper public resistance, with just 14 per cent backing the idea compared to 63 per cent who oppose it. The results suggest significant public scepticism toward both the trade and territorial measures being considered. The polling data underscores a broader pattern of public hesitation regarding tariff increases on neighbouring countries and symbolic changes to geographic landmarks, indicating that such proposals lack majority support among the American electorate.
