Amnesty International Alleges Russia Used Deception to Recruit Foreign Fighters

Amnesty International has accused Russian authorities of orchestrating a systematic trafficking operation to recruit foreign nationals for combat roles in Ukraine, according to a new investigation by the rights group.

The report alleges that individuals from various countries were approached with legitimate-sounding job offers before being coerced into joining Russia's military upon arrival. According to the findings, recruiters targeted economically vulnerable foreigners with promises of lucrative employment, housing, and other benefits. Once on Russian soil, many were reportedly pressured or forced to enlist in military units being deployed to the conflict zone.

The investigation documents accounts from individuals who claimed they were deceived about the nature of their recruitment and the conditions they would face. Amnesty International characterized the practice as a form of human trafficking, combining false advertising with coercive labor practices that placed unsuspecting recruits in life-threatening situations.

The allegations add to mounting international scrutiny of Russia's military recruitment practices during its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Rights organizations have previously documented concerns about the treatment of foreign fighters and the transparency of recruitment efforts.
