Amravati archer Kumkum targets Olympic glory after Asian Games triumph

Kumkum Mohod's precision proved decisive at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan when her arrow found a perfect 10, securing India's maiden women's individual recurve archery gold medal at the continental championship. The achievement ignited celebrations in Gosavi Colony, her neighbourhood in Amravati, Maharashtra, where residents greeted the teenager's historic win with enthusiasm.

The archer, who began training at a local range under coach Prafull Dange at age eight, will return to India with three medals from the Games. In addition to her individual gold, Mohod contributed to India's women's team gold and claimed silver as part of the mixed team event, establishing herself as a consistent performer across multiple disciplines.

Anil Mohod, Kumkum's father, expressed confidence in his daughter's continued success and wider ambitions. "She has competed in several national and international competitions, but this was her first individual medal, and at the Asian Games no less," he said. "She is thrilled to have achieved what she was aiming for."

With the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in sight, the archer's family has set sights beyond continental success. Mohod's performances at the Asian Games suggest a strong foundation for pursuing Olympic competition, where she could represent India on sport's grandest stage.
