Anbumani calls on Tamil Nadu to act on flood mitigation panel

DMK member Anbumani Ramadoss has pressed the Tamil Nadu government to expedite the release and implementation of the Thiruppugazh Committee's recommendations on flood management. Speaking on the matter, Ramadoss highlighted the severity of recent weather patterns affecting the state capital.

Several areas of Chennai experienced rainfall with intensity comparable to cloudbursts during recent monsoon events, according to Ramadoss's observations. The lawmaker cautioned that if such extreme weather occurrences become regular, the state would face a critical need to deploy comprehensive flood mitigation infrastructure and policies.

The Thiruppugazh Committee was constituted to study and recommend solutions for Chennai's recurring flooding challenges, which have caused significant disruption to residents and infrastructure in recent years. Ramadoss's intervention underscores growing concerns among elected representatives about the adequacy of current flood management systems in the city.

The appeal comes as Tamil Nadu prepares for the Northeast monsoon season, when the capital typically experiences heavy rainfall. Experts have linked intensifying precipitation patterns to broader climate trends, making adaptive urban water management strategies increasingly critical for densely populated metropolitan areas like Chennai.
