A study published in the peer-reviewed journal Icarus suggests that a catastrophic flood originating from Valles Marineris, the Solar System's largest canyon system, may have raised the mean sea level of ancient Mars by approximately 34 metres.

Researchers estimate the flood released around 1,245 trillion cubic metres of water across the Martian surface. Valles Marineris, a vast system of canyons stretching across the Red Planet, is believed to have been the source of this ancient inundation that would have dramatically reshaped Mars' hydrological landscape.

The findings add to growing evidence that Mars once possessed a substantial ocean covering much of its northern hemisphere billions of years ago. Such periodic megafloods would have played a critical role in shaping the planet's surface features and potentially influenced conditions for early microbial life, had it existed.

The research underscores the dynamic geological processes that shaped Mars during its ancient, wetter period.
