Andhra Pradesh braces for power disruptions as deep depression approaches

Andhra Pradesh's top energy officials have been directed to take immediate steps to protect the state's power distribution network ahead of severe weather conditions triggered by a deep depression forming over the Bay of Bengal. State Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar cautioned that the system could cause substantial damage to critical power infrastructure and lead to widespread supply disruptions across the region.

The precautionary directive emphasises enhanced vigilance in coastal districts and low-lying areas, which typically face the greatest risk of infrastructure damage during heavy downpours and strong winds accompanying such weather systems. Officials have been instructed to mobilise field teams, conduct preventive maintenance on vulnerable sections of the distribution network, and ensure adequate emergency response capabilities.

Energy authorities are coordinating with meteorological agencies to monitor the depression's movement and intensity. The focus remains on minimising disruption to essential power supply to households, hospitals, water treatment facilities and other critical services that may be affected during the weather event.

Andhra Pradesh has experienced significant power infrastructure damage during previous monsoon seasons, with coastal regions particularly susceptible to wind and flood-related outages. The state's power distribution companies are reportedly preparing contingency plans and pre-positioning repair crews to restore services swiftly should disruptions occur.
