The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet sub-committee has stepped in to address the rising costs of everyday food items that have strained household budgets across the state. The intervention comes as onion prices have climbed to ₹35 per kilogramme, alongside elevated rates for tur dal and palm oil in retail markets.
To ease the price burden on consumers, the committee has ordered the procurement of 10,000 metric tonnes of KNM (Kerala-grown non-basmati) rice from millers in Nellore district. The rice will be distributed through dedicated fair-price counters, ensuring availability at affordable rates for residents across the state.
The move represents an effort to provide immediate relief in food inflation, which has affected purchasing power in both urban and rural areas. By sourcing directly from local rice millers and establishing special distribution channels, the state government aims to stabilise prices while supporting agricultural communities.
The Cabinet sub-committee's intervention signals the state's commitment to managing commodity price volatility through targeted procurement and controlled retail mechanisms, a strategy adopted by several Indian states grappling with similar inflationary pressures.
