Andhra Pradesh has announced a comprehensive strategy to guarantee uninterrupted power supply across the state, even as climate variability poses fresh challenges to energy security. The roadmap centers on augmenting thermal generation capacity by 1,600 megawatts through competitive tariff-based bidding, expanding the state's generation portfolio to meet growing demand.
To insulate the power system from supply disruptions, the state has mandated that thermal power developers maintain a minimum 15-day coal inventory at all times. This buffer stock requirement is designed to cushion against supply chain volatility and ensure continuous operations during periods of coal shortage or logistical constraints.
Distribution companies operating in the state have been directed to prepare comprehensive 12-month power procurement and supply plans. This forward-planning requirement is intended to align power procurement with anticipated demand patterns and coordinate investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure accordingly.
The initiative reflects growing focus among Indian states on building resilience in power systems. Officials expect the measures to stabilize tariffs and reduce the frequency and duration of outages, supporting industrial competitiveness and consumer reliability in one of India's significant power-consuming regions.
