Andhra Pradesh delays rural polls to November 5 amid staffing crunch

The Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission announced a postponement of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections to November 5, separating them from the originally planned civic body polls scheduled for November 1.

The decision stems from logistical constraints faced by the election body. Officials stated they lack adequate manpower to simultaneously conduct vote counting for both civic polls and rural body elections on the same day. The staggered schedule is intended to allow sufficient time and resources for the proper conduct and counting of votes in each election phase.

The rescheduling comes as Andhra Pradesh gears up for a significant electoral exercise across its three tiers of local government. While municipal corporation and civic body polls will now proceed on November 1 as originally scheduled, voters in rural areas will cast their ballots for MPTC and ZPTC positions four days later.

The election authority's decision underscores the administrative challenges involved in conducting large-scale simultaneous elections across multiple jurisdictions. The two-phase approach is expected to ensure smoother operations and better resource allocation for both polling and counting processes.
