Andhra Pradesh expands water supply to kidney disease-affected villages

Purified drinking water has reached 38 villages in Andhra Pradesh's NTR district that have been grappling with high rates of kidney disease, marking a significant expansion of the national water supply initiative. The extension came after intervention by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who championed the infrastructure project to address the health crisis in the region.

The water supply network, comprising a 130-kilometre pipeline, channels treated Krishna river water directly to the affected communities. The project aims to provide safe drinking water to residents who have faced elevated incidence of renal ailments, a health concern linked to water quality issues in the district.

The expansion forms part of the broader Jal Jeevan Mission, the government's flagship programme to ensure universal household water access across India. NTR district's health challenges have made it a priority area for water infrastructure development under the initiative.

The pipeline infrastructure represents a coordinated effort between state and national authorities to tackle waterborne health issues in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh. Officials indicated that the project would continue to be monitored to ensure consistent supply and water quality standards for the beneficiary villages.
