The women's wing of the Andhra Pradesh Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Amaravati has formally raised demands for an extended childcare leave policy covering two years for women employees in the state. The proposal aims to provide female workers with adequate time to manage childcare responsibilities following childbirth, addressing long-standing concerns about balancing professional and domestic commitments.
The initiative reflects growing advocacy for improved maternity and childcare support across Indian workplaces. Currently, most Indian employers are required to provide 26 weeks of maternity benefits, though additional unpaid leave options vary by organization and sector. The proposed two-year childcare leave would significantly exceed existing statutory provisions.
The JAC's women's wing has positioned the demand as essential for enabling greater female participation in the workforce and reducing economic hardship faced by working mothers. Advocates argue that extended leave provisions would allow women to return to employment without compromising child welfare, particularly during crucial developmental years.
The state government has not yet formally responded to the proposal. The demand comes amid broader discussions in India about workplace reforms aimed at supporting women's economic participation and addressing systemic barriers to gender equality in professional settings.
