Andhra Pradesh junior doctors reject modest stipend hike from 2027

The Andhra Pradesh government has notified a stipend structure for junior doctors through Government Order Ms. No. 141, detailing a phased increase over the coming years. The order, released a month after the conclusion of a previous strike by medical professionals, provides for a one-time 10% increase for interns and 5% for postgraduates during 2026, followed by a 3.5% annual increment from 2027 onwards.

The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors' United Association (APJUDA) has rejected the government's decision, asserting that the stipend hike was determined unilaterally without adequate consultation with the medical fraternity. The association has called on the state authorities to reconsider the order and engage in meaningful dialogue before implementing the revised structure.

The announcement comes as the state seeks to stabilize relations with its junior medical workforce following recent industrial action. The proposed increases, while addressing some demands for improved compensation, fall short of expectations held by medical professionals in the state. APJUDA's opposition signals continued tensions between the government and junior doctors over remuneration and working conditions.
