Andhra Pradesh launches subsidised onion scheme at ₹35 per kg

The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a subsidised onion distribution programme aimed at providing relief to consumers grappling with elevated vegetable prices. Beginning September 30, the Vijayawada Rythu Bazars—direct retail outlets operated by farmer collectives—will sell onions at ₹35 per kilogramme, substantially below prevailing market rates.

Under the scheme's terms, each family is permitted to purchase a maximum of two kilogrammes per month. Buyers must present either an Aadhaar card or ration card to complete transactions, ensuring equitable distribution and preventing hoarding.

State officials indicated the programme's success in Vijayawada will determine its expansion across Rythu Bazars throughout Andhra Pradesh. The move reflects growing government attention to food inflation, which has affected household budgets across the region.

Rythu Bazars, which facilitate direct sales from farmers to consumers while eliminating intermediaries, have emerged as a key policy instrument for price stabilisation. The onion initiative represents the latest in a series of targeted interventions to manage volatility in essential commodity markets.
