Andhra Pradesh launches water scheme targeting 90 lakh households

The scheme, christened 'Amarajeevi Jaladhara', was formally launched by Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan at Proddatur in Kadapa district on Wednesday. The initiative seeks to expand access to safe drinking water in rural and semi-urban areas, building on earlier water supply programmes implemented across Andhra Pradesh.

Official sources indicate the project represents a substantial commitment to infrastructure development in the water sector, with the funding allocation reflecting the state government's prioritisation of basic amenities. The scheme's rollout is expected to benefit multiple districts across the state, though specific implementation timelines and phasing details were not immediately clarified.

The launch comes as Naidu's Telugu Desam Party-led government settles into its second term following recent state elections. Water supply infrastructure has remained a key electoral promise for successive administrations in Andhra Pradesh, where seasonal water scarcity affects large rural populations.

Authorities have indicated that the 'Amarajeevi Jaladhara' scheme will prioritise areas currently lacking formal water supply networks, with an emphasis on reaching underserved communities in the state's interior regions.
