Andhra Pradesh poised for local body elections pending SC ruling on BC quota

Andhra Pradesh has finalised all logistical arrangements for its local body elections and stands ready to conduct the polls, with the state now awaiting a crucial Supreme Court decision on backward caste quota provisions, according to government officials.

The election machinery has been mobilised and administrative machinery set in place across municipalities, urban local bodies, and gram panchayats statewide. However, the absence of clarity on the court's stance regarding BC reservations has kept election scheduling in abeyance, state officials said.

Minister for Local Administration N. Narayana indicated that the delay in conducting these elections carries significant financial implications for the state. Should the polls be postponed further, Andhra Pradesh risks losing approximately ₹12,000 crore in allocations from the 16th Finance Commission, funds critical for infrastructure development and local governance initiatives.

The state has been grappling with litigation over the implementation of BC quota provisions in local body elections, a contentious issue that has remained pending at the apex court. The resolution of this matter is essential before the state election commission can formally issue notification and notification schedules for the polls.

Once the Supreme Court delivers its judgment, state officials indicated that elections could be held at short notice given the current state of readiness across administrative divisions.
