Andhra Pradesh prepares for potentially devastating cyclonic storm Arnab

Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for the potential arrival of Cyclone Arnab, which meteorologists warn could develop into a very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS) and impact the state in coming days. If the cyclone reaches VSCS intensity over the coastal region, it would mark the first storm of this category to affect Andhra Pradesh since Titli devastated the state five years ago.

The India Meteorological Department has maintained detailed records of very severe cyclonic storms in the region dating back to 1970. According to IMD data, exactly ten such storms have impacted Andhra Pradesh during the 53-year period between 1970 and 2023, underscoring the significance of storms reaching this classification.

State authorities have begun preparatory measures ahead of Arnab's potential approach, with disaster management officials reviewing evacuation protocols and ensuring emergency response systems are in place. The cyclone's trajectory and intensity will be closely monitored in the coming days as the IMD continues to update its forecasts and issue weather advisories.

Very severe cyclonic storms represent the most intense category of tropical cyclones, capable of causing widespread destruction, severe flooding, and significant loss of life if they make landfall in populated areas. The last such storm to affect Andhra Pradesh, Titli, caused considerable damage across multiple districts and disrupted normal life for weeks.
