Andhra Pradesh races to hold local body polls amid funding crunch

Andhra Pradesh is grappling with a dual challenge as it prepares for local body elections: fulfilling constitutional requirements while addressing a significant financial shortfall. The state is pursuing ₹2,300 crore in rural development grants and ₹1,562 crore allocated for urban projects, both of which depend on having duly elected local governance structures in place.

Chief Minister Naidu's appeal for expedited elections reflects the mounting pressure on the state's coffers and development agenda. According to government officials, the absence of constitutionally mandated elected local bodies has prevented the state from accessing these substantial central funds, creating a bottleneck in implementing grassroots-level development projects across villages and municipalities.

The timing of the elections is critical, as delays could further hamper infrastructure development and welfare schemes that depend on locally elected representatives. The state administration has emphasized that conducting the polls promptly is essential not merely for constitutional compliance, but as a pragmatic step to unlock resources needed for rural infrastructure, sanitation, healthcare facilities, and urban civic amenities.
