Andhra Pradesh readies 135 camps as Sabari river levels surge

Officials in Andhra Pradesh's Polavaram district have escalated disaster preparedness measures as the Sabari river swells, triggering concerns about widespread flooding across the region. The establishment of 135 relief camps represents a significant mobilization effort to accommodate residents from low-lying areas should water levels breach critical thresholds.

The surge in river levels has placed approximately 161 villages along the Sabari corridor in a heightened state of alert. Authorities have identified these settlements as vulnerable to inundation if current inflow trends persist, prompting precautionary measures to ensure civilian safety.

Healthcare authorities have taken specific steps to protect one of the most vulnerable populations in flood-prone areas. A total of 101 pregnant women living in at-risk zones have been counseled to maintain readiness for immediate relocation to hospitals, ensuring that maternal health emergencies can be managed safely away from potential flood zones.

The district administration has coordinated with multiple agencies to ensure adequate provisions at the relief camps, including food supplies, medical facilities, and shelter arrangements. Officials continue to monitor river conditions closely, with disaster management teams remaining on standby for rapid deployment should evacuation orders be issued.
