A tiger that had been tranquilized and relocated to Papikonda National Park in February is now the subject of an urgent recapture operation as it wanders toward inhabited areas near Rajamahendravaram in East Godavari district. The Andhra Pradesh forest department has activated what officials are calling Operation Stripes to prevent potential human-wildlife conflict as the animal, dubbed Explorer, continues its movements closer to populated zones.
Experts from Pune-based RESQ Trust, a wildlife rescue organization, are being mobilized to lead the tranquilization and capture mission. The tiger was initially captured and sedated on February 6 before being released into Papikonda National Park as part of wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
The movement of the tiger toward human habitations has raised concerns among local authorities and residents. Forest officials are coordinating evacuation protocols and safety measures in settlements that may be in the animal's path. The decision to resume capture operations reflects growing apprehension about the tiger's trajectory and the risks posed to both human communities and the animal itself.
Andhra Pradesh's tiger management programme has faced challenges in recent years as conservation efforts seek to balance wildlife protection with public safety. This operation marks a critical intervention point as authorities attempt to relocate the animal away from populated areas once again.
