Andhra Pradesh RTC unions oppose private electric bus tenders
Employees' joint action committee demands cancellation of plans to award 1,450 electric bus operations to private operators. The unions plan protest actions across RTC depots this week.

The joint action committee (JAC) of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) employees has called for the cancellation of tenders to operate 1,450 electric buses through private parties, signalling escalating tensions over the corporation's modernisation plans.
In response to the proposed privatisation move, the JAC has announced protest measures, with employees instructed to wear black badges while performing their duties across RTC depots on October 22, 23, and 26. The symbolic protest is intended to draw attention to employee concerns regarding the outsourcing of bus operations.
The unions have warned that they will intensify their agitation if the corporation does not address their grievances. The JAC contends that awarding contracts to private operators could undermine job security and working conditions for current APSRTC staff members.
The push for electric buses represents a significant shift in the state's transport strategy toward cleaner energy. However, employees fear that private operation of these new vehicles could sideline existing workers and reduce government employment in the sector.
The dispute reflects broader tensions across Indian public transport systems, where modernisation initiatives involving private participation have frequently prompted resistance from worker unions concerned about employment preservation and labour standards.
