Andhra Pradesh seeks ₹200 crore for Kakinada underground drainage project

The Andhra Pradesh government is preparing to approach the Centre for ₹200 crore in funding to develop an underground drainage system in Kakinada, according to the state's Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister. The proposed project aims to upgrade the city's sewerage infrastructure and improve sanitation facilities across the port town.

Kakinada, a major commercial hub in the state, has long grappled with inadequate drainage systems that contribute to waterlogging and hygiene concerns during monsoon seasons. The underground drainage network is expected to address these challenges by providing a modern, efficient alternative to the existing surface-level systems.

The MAUD Minister indicated that the state government would submit a formal proposal to the central government seeking financial assistance under relevant urban development schemes. The project is anticipated to benefit thousands of residents and businesses in Kakinada by improving overall civic infrastructure and public health standards.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts by the state to modernize urban infrastructure in key cities across Andhra Pradesh. Officials are expected to conduct detailed feasibility studies and prepare comprehensive project reports to support the funding request.
