Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Union Pushes for Restoration of Old Pension Scheme

Teachers' organizations in Andhra Pradesh have renewed calls for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme, arguing that the transition to the National Pension System has left educators financially vulnerable. The federation has submitted formal requests to both state and central authorities, seeking a reversal of the pension structure that took effect in 2004.

Federation leaders have alleged that government policies at both levels are contributing to the deterioration of public education infrastructure and services. They contend that reduced investments in state-run schools are pushing parents toward private institutions, creating a two-tier education system that disadvantages economically weaker sections of society.

The Old Pension Scheme provided guaranteed pension payouts based on final salary and years of service, whereas the National Pension System requires individual contribution accumulation and exposes retirees to market fluctuations. Teachers argue that the current system fails to provide adequate security for educators after retirement.

The demands come amid broader discussions across Indian states regarding pension reform and education financing. Several states have either restored or are considering reverting to the Old Pension Scheme, citing employee grievances and social welfare considerations. The Andhra Pradesh teachers' body has indicated that continued pressure on the issue will be mounted through sustained advocacy and engagement with policymakers.
