Animal rights group exposes infant macaque experiments at US university

Animal welfare organisation PETA has released video evidence documenting experimental procedures conducted on infant macaques at the University of Washington, prompting fresh scrutiny of practices in primate-based research facilities.

According to the footage, newborn macaques just days old have been forcibly separated from their mothers to undergo neurological testing designed to study the effects of neurotoxin exposure on developing primates. The procedures are part of ongoing research into how toxins affect brain development in mammals.

The organisation alleges that a significant number of the test subjects were euthanised following the completion of experiments, raising questions about the long-term treatment of animals used in such studies. Animal welfare experts have characterised the practice as ethically problematic, noting that separation from mothers during critical developmental periods can cause severe physiological and psychological harm to primates.

The disclosure adds to growing international concern regarding the standards and oversight governing animal experimentation in research institutions. Primate research remains controversial globally, with animal rights advocates and scientific ethicists continuing to debate the necessity and justification for such studies against concerns about animal welfare and the availability of alternative research methodologies.
