Animal welfare groups file complaint over improper pet crematorium disposal

MANILA — The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (Paws) and the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) escalated their concerns to the National Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday, seeking action against a pet crematorium accused of mishandling the remains of deceased animals.

According to initial reports, Ahjay Paws Aftercare Pet Crematorium allegedly dumped approximately 29 animals, including dogs and cats, in Bulacan province. The discovery prompted the animal welfare organizations to seek an official investigation into the facility's practices and the circumstances surrounding the improper disposal.

The NBI has initiated a probe into the allegations, examining whether the crematorium violated protocols for handling pet remains and potential violations of animal welfare laws. Pet cremation services are increasingly common in the Philippines as pet ownership rises, but the case highlights concerns about standards and oversight in the industry.

Animal welfare advocates have called for stricter regulations and monitoring of facilities offering pet aftercare services. The investigation is expected to determine whether criminal charges are warranted against the crematorium's operators.
