Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, said it has successfully disrupted multiple coordinated campaigns targeting its technology. The activity included a suspected Russia-linked cyber espionage operation and concurrent efforts by Chinese AI firms seeking to extract and replicate Claude's technical capabilities, according to the company's findings.
The disruption represents a significant development in the escalating competition for dominance in artificial intelligence technology. State-sponsored actors and commercial entities have increasingly targeted leading AI firms as governments and companies worldwide race to develop advanced language models and machine learning systems.
Anthropric's disclosure comes as geopolitical competition over AI capabilities intensifies across Asia-Pacific and globally. The region has emerged as a critical battleground for AI development, with countries including China investing heavily in AI research and infrastructure. Malaysia and other Southeast Asian nations have also begun developing national AI strategies to capitalise on the technology's potential.
The company said it took steps to secure its systems and prevent further unauthorised access attempts. Security researchers have warned that as AI technology becomes more valuable and strategically important, efforts to steal proprietary models and research will likely continue to escalate, creating new cybersecurity challenges for technology companies operating across borders.
