KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim voiced gratitude to Formula 1 fans on Friday, reflecting on Malaysia's storied history with the sport while signalling the government's interest in a potential future grand prix at the Sepang International Circuit.

During remarks addressing the motorsport community, Anwar acknowledged Bahrain's role in facilitating discussions around Malaysia's involvement with the F1 calendar, underscoring the diplomatic efforts required to secure major international sporting events.

The Prime Minister's comments come amid ongoing efforts by Malaysian authorities to revitalise the nation's presence in world motorsport. The Sepang circuit, located on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, previously hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix for nearly two decades before the event was discontinued in 2017.

"Hopefully, we will meet again in Sepang," Anwar said, signalling the government's willingness to explore bringing Formula 1 racing back to Malaysian soil. His remarks reflect broader efforts to position Malaysia as a premier destination for international sporting events and reinvigorate the nation's motorsport industry.

The development suggests potential behind-the-scenes negotiations with F1 organisers, though no formal announcement regarding a future Malaysian Grand Prix has been made.
