Anwar expresses sympathy for Shuhaily but insists none are above law

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has struck a careful balance between expressing sympathy for AKPS director-general Shuhaily Halim and reiterating that legal processes must proceed regardless of political considerations.

While acknowledging Shuhaily's situation, Anwar emphasised that the principle of equality before the law must be upheld in Malaysia. The Prime Minister stated that no individual, regardless of position or status, can be placed above legal accountability.

Anwar dismissed suggestions that the criminal charges levelled against Shuhaily are part of a politically motivated campaign. He rejected the characterisation, underscoring that legal proceedings against public officials must be viewed independently of partisan politics.

The comments come as Shuhaily faces legal scrutiny in his capacity as the director-general of the Anti-Corruption Commission (AKPS). Anwar's statement appears designed to demonstrate the government's commitment to the rule of law while avoiding perceptions of political persecution.

The matter reflects ongoing tensions surrounding high-profile legal cases involving government officials and the broader question of how such proceedings are perceived by the public and international observers monitoring Malaysia's democratic institutions.
