PUTRAJAYA — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the government to intensify efforts against online shopping scams that have increasingly plagued Malaysian consumers, according to a statement from Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
The directive comes as complaints mount over fraudulent e-commerce transactions where buyers receive items that differ significantly from product descriptions or images displayed on shopping platforms. The issue has raised concerns about consumer protection in Malaysia's rapidly expanding digital retail sector.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry has been tasked with leading the crackdown, examining patterns of seller misconduct and working to strengthen enforcement mechanisms across online marketplaces. Authorities will coordinate with platform operators to establish stricter verification procedures for merchants and improve dispute resolution processes for affected buyers.
The government initiative reflects growing pressure to address gaps in consumer safeguards as more Malaysians conduct purchases through e-commerce channels. Officials have signalled that penalties for fraudulent sellers may be enhanced to serve as a deterrent against future violations.
Consumers facing suspected scams are encouraged to report incidents to relevant authorities and keep documentation of their transactions for investigation purposes.
