Anwar pushes for tighter GLC governance to prevent family-style control

KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has renewed calls for enhanced governance standards at government-linked companies (GLCs), emphasising that those leading such organisations must maintain professional distance from their operations rather than treating them as personal holdings.

Anwar's remarks signal government intent to introduce a Government-Owned Entities Bill designed to tighten regulatory controls over the sprawling GLC sector, a significant component of Malaysia's economy that has long faced scrutiny over management practices and leadership accountability.

The proposed legislation would establish clearer delineation between executive authority and personal interests, addressing longstanding concerns about conflicts of interest and nepotism within state-owned enterprises. Such measures are viewed as part of broader efforts to strengthen institutional governance and restore public confidence in government-controlled entities.

The initiative reflects mounting pressure to modernise GLC oversight mechanisms, ensuring these organisations operate transparently and prioritise national interests over individual benefit. Officials have indicated the legislative framework will define executive responsibilities more explicitly while establishing independent monitoring mechanisms to assess performance and compliance standards.
