The office of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has moved to defend the visit by Myanmar's Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, characterizing it as a necessary component of regional diplomacy rather than a controversial endorsement of Myanmar's military junta.
According to statements from Anwar's representatives, keeping communication lines open with all parties remains crucial for addressing the ongoing instability in Myanmar. Officials emphasised that diplomatic engagement does not constitute approval of any government's internal policies, but rather reflects pragmatic efforts to facilitate dialogue and understanding.
"Conflicts cannot be resolved if all communication channels are shut," the aide stated, highlighting Malaysia's position as a regional player committed to peaceful resolution of disputes. The remarks come amid international scrutiny of Myanmar's military leadership following the 2021 coup and subsequent humanitarian concerns.
Malaysia has historically sought to maintain constructive relationships across Southeast Asia while balancing its commitment to regional stability. The visit reflects Kuala Lumpur's diplomatic approach of engaging with regional actors to encourage de-escalation and dialogue, officials indicated.
