Anwar to decide timing of PM term limit bill, says Azalina

The bill to impose term limits on the prime minister's office is prepared for reintroduction to Parliament, Law and Institutional Reform Minister Azalina Othman Said said, though the timing remains at the discretion of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The proposed constitutional amendment fell two votes short of the required two-thirds parliamentary majority when it was previously tabled in March. The setback left the government scrambling to secure additional support for a measure that has become a key pillar of Anwar's reform agenda.

Azalina's comments indicate the government has not abandoned efforts to pass the legislation, which would cap the prime minister's tenure to two consecutive five-year terms. The narrow margin of failure suggests the government is working to consolidate backing before attempting another vote.

The timing of the bill's reintroduction could prove crucial, as the government seeks to demonstrate legislative momentum on institutional reforms while managing competing parliamentary priorities. No date has been announced for when the measure might return to the House.
