AP Southern Discom achieves milestone with 100,000 rooftop solar connections

The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has crossed the one lakh mark in rooftop solar installations, a milestone that underscores the state's commitment to renewable energy and inclusive electrification. All connections have been provided to homes of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities across the region, making it a significant socio-economic initiative.

The rapid deployment has been achieved through the Utility-Led Aggregation model, which has enabled the addition of 210 megawatts of solar capacity. This performance places Andhra Pradesh among the top four states in the country for solar installations, reflecting strong implementation on the ground.

The APSPDCL, which manages power distribution in nine districts of southern Andhra Pradesh, has set an ambitious target to expand the programme to 2.07 lakh homes. The utility's strategy combines renewable energy adoption with targeted welfare benefits for marginalized communities, aligning with both climate and social equity objectives.

The initiative demonstrates how distribution companies can serve as vehicles for large-scale renewable energy penetration while simultaneously addressing energy access disparities. As India pushes towards its renewable energy targets, such programmes offer a replicable model for other states to follow in integrating rooftop solar with inclusive development.
