Apayao fishpond venture yields first harvest, boosts farmer incomes

The ST Tilapia Productions Association harvested its inaugural batch of tilapia on September 3, yielding 57.8 kilograms of fish and generating P9,826 in gross revenue. The milestone marks a significant step forward for the farming collective based in Luna, Apayao, which aims to provide member farmers with a reliable income source.

The 400-square-meter fishpond serves as a shared resource for the 15 farmers and fisherfolk participating in the program. Members have invested time and effort in establishing the aquaculture operation from fingerling stage through to market-ready harvest, demonstrating the viability of the cooperative model in the province.

The initiative addresses a critical need for sustainable livelihood options in rural Apayao, where agricultural and fishing communities often face limited income opportunities. By pooling resources and labor through the collective structure, member farmers can access markets and achieve economies of scale that would be difficult for individual operators.

As the association prepares for subsequent production cycles, the success of this first harvest provides a proof-of-concept for expanding tilapia farming in the region. Officials view the program as a template for developing additional aquaculture ventures that could benefit more farming communities across Apayao.
